The Insulted and Humiliated () The idea to start writing this novel came to Dostoyevsky when he moved to St Petersburg, after having spent time in exile. To a certain extent, the novel is autobiographical and is told from the point of view of a young writer, Vanya, who is struggling to make a living in the s. Humiliated and Insulted is now one of my favorite novels by Dostoevsky. It has all the elements of his more epic novels, and is narrated with a sense of urgency that is very compelling. The translation is superb and reads better, in my opinion, than any Dostoevsky translation I have steinrenovationanddesigngroup.com: Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Dostoyevsky's The Used and Abused is a fresh retelling of an early Fyodor Dostoyevsky novel previously translated and published under such titles as Injury and Insult, The Insulted and Injured, The Insulted and Humiliated, and Humiliated and Insulted.. Writing while he was serving time in a Russian prison, Dostoyevsky was heavily influenced by the novels of Charles Dickens. First published in , Humiliated and Insulted plunges the reader into a world of moral degradation, childhood trauma, unrequited love and irreconcilable relationships. At the centre of the story are a young struggling author, an orphaned teenager and a depraved aristocrat, who not only foreshadows the great figures of evil in Dostoevsky's 4/5(10).

I suspect the novel may be Dostoyevsky’s weakest piece of work, for the (rather shallow) reason that, in my experience, it’s the least talked about. That is not to say that “The Insulted and Humiliated” is a bad novel.

Oscar Wilde claimed that Humiliated and Insulted is "not at all inferior to the other great masterpieces," and Friedrich Nietzsche is said to have wept over it.
