The maximum number of these Prisoners on Parole should have been In fact there seemed to have been far more than this. I found this account of a prisoner’s experience in a book called, ‘Prisoners of War in Britain ’ by Francis Abell (Oxford University Press ). The Caird Library has recently installed a new display of archive and library material. The theme is Prisoners of War at Home and Overseas, , and it reveals what life was like for the men and boys captured during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. During this period, hundreds of thousands of prisoners of war were held captive at depots, barracks, and on board prison ships.

These prison ship records show how prisoner populations were managed at Plymouth and Dartmoor in the early 19th century. There is a gap in the Plymouth records from May to January However, the Dartmoor General Entry Books appear to be complete and nearly all prisoners . This book, along with the author's other title - "A History of Napoleonic and American Prisoners of War Hulk, Depot and Parole" - aims to correct this imbalance, and is the result of the author's quest over thirty years into this almost-forgotten field of history.
